Spain
Gypaetus barbatus
10 foot maximum wing-span. Only bone-eating specialist bird in the world - Found in Spain, France, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Africa. Rare and declining in many areas. Recently reintroduced in the Alps. Adults feed on the bones of carcusses which they will often drop on flat rocks from the air to break them into smaller more easily swallowed pieces. Primarily high mountain dwellers, nests in caves and remote rocky cliffs and often engage in polyandry. Reddish color of adults comes from bathing in iron-rich springs and may confer status.

Meet the Bone-Eating Daredevil - The Lammergeier - Spain's Winged Wonder!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness the majestic CAN-2963, also known as the Bearded Vulture or Lammergeier, showcasing its incredible hunting skills. With a maximum wingspan of 10 feet, this rare and declining species is truly a sight to behold. As the only bone-eating specialist bird in the world, our feathery friend proudly displays a massive carcass bone firmly gripped in its beak. Found across Spain, France, Greece, Turkey, Italy, and even Africa, these high mountain dwellers are true survivors. Notorious for their unique feeding habits, adult Lammergeiers often drop bones from great heights onto flat rocks below. This aerial acrobatics allows them to break down their prey into smaller pieces that are easier to swallow – talk about dining with style! Nesting in remote rocky cliffs and caves adds an air of mystery to these fascinating creatures. And did you know? They're not afraid of commitment! Engaging in polyandry (multiple male partners), they take love triangles to new heights. The reddish hue adorning their feathers comes from indulging in iron-rich springs – it's like having a natural spa day while maintaining status among fellow vultures! So next time you find yourself exploring Europe's breathtaking landscapes or simply admiring wildlife photography by John Cancalosi at Ardea Wildlife Pets Environment gallery – keep an eye out
