Deucalion and Pyrrha throwing stones, 1517-18 (fresco) (detail of 2646084)

2646085 Deucalion and Pyrrha throwing stones, 1517-18 (fresco) (detail of 2646084) by Peruzzi, Baldassarre (1481-1536); Villa Farnesina, Rome, Italy; (add.info.: Rome, Villa Farnesina, The Hall of Perspectives: the ample frieze with mythological scenes inspired by the Ovid Metamorphoses. Detail of Deucalion and Pyrrha throwing stones.
Frescoes by Baldassarre Peruzzi (1517-8).
Once the deluge was over and the couple had given thanks to Zeus, Deucalion (said in several of the sources to have been aged 82 at the time) consulted an oracle of Themis about how to repopulate the earth. He was told to cover his head and throw the bones of your mother behind your shoulder. Deucalion and Pyrrha understood that " mother" is Gaia, the mother of all living things, and the " bones" to be rocks. They threw the rocks behind their shoulders and the stones formed people. Pyrrhas became women; Deucalions became men.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing detail of the fresco "Deucalion and Pyrrha throwing stones" by Baldassarre Peruzzi. Located in the Villa Farnesina, Rome, Italy, this artwork is part of The Hall of Perspectives and depicts a scene inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses. After surviving a devastating flood, Deucalion and Pyrrha express their gratitude to Zeus before seeking guidance on how to repopulate the earth. They consult an oracle who instructs them to cover their heads and throw the bones of their mother behind their shoulders. Understanding that "mother" refers to Gaia, the mother of all living things, they interpret "bones" as rocks. In this detailed portion of the fresco, we witness Deucalion and Pyrrha stooped over as they collect and toss stones behind them. These rocks miraculously transform into people upon landing. Women emerge from those thrown by Pyrrha while men arise from those launched by Deucalion. The background features a temple dedicated to Themis, the goddess whom the couple prayed to for guidance in repopulating the world. This intricate artwork showcases Peruzzi's mastery in capturing both mythological storytelling and architectural details. With its rich colors and intricate composition, this detail from Peruzzi's fresco invites viewers into a mythical realm where ancient legends come alive through artistry.
