EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Brazilian and Netherlands section of the Main Building at the Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia, 1876. The exhibition, which marked the first official World's Fair in the United States, was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Designed by Herman J. Schwarzmann, this remarkable building stands as a testament to architectural brilliance. Constructed using brick, glass, iron, and granite, it exudes grandeur and elegance in its beaux-arts style. Memorial Hall, as it is now known, served as an art gallery during the exhibition period. The sheer magnitude of artistic contributions received for this event necessitated additional structures to accommodate them all. A separate annex was built specifically to house these precious artworks while another building was dedicated solely to displaying photography. As we gaze upon this albumen print captured by an anonymous American photographer from that era (19th century), we are transported back in time to witness a momentous occasion where cultures converged under one roof. This image serves as a reminder not only of our shared history but also of humanity's boundless creativity and ingenuity. Preserved within the archives of Free Library of Philadelphia today, this photograph continues to evoke awe-inspiring emotions while providing us with a glimpse into a significant chapter in both American and global history.
