The seaman's uniform (colour photo)
8668579 The seaman's uniform (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The seaman's uniform. Until 1857 seamen of the Royal Navy had largely pleased themselves with regard to their apparel, but in that year an official uniform, including the black kerchief and three rows of white braid on the collar, was prescribed. Tradition has it that the kerchief was originally worn as mourning for Nelson and that the three rows of braid commemorate his three principal victories, but this is merely a popular story without any sound foundation. The black kerchief was primarily worn around the forehead or neck as a "sweat rag, " and as such had been in use long before Trafalgar. The rows of white braid had not been known in the Navy before 1857, when they were introduced without any apparent reason. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant colour print captures the iconic seaman's uniform, a symbol of tradition and history in the Royal Navy. The image showcases the official uniform introduced in 1857, complete with a black kerchief and three rows of white braid on the collar.
The black kerchief, originally believed to be worn in mourning for Admiral Nelson, was actually used as a practical "sweat rag" around the forehead or neck long before Trafalgar. The three rows of white braid on the collar were introduced without any clear reason but have since become synonymous with naval attire.
This photograph is part of a set of 50 cigarette cards depicting Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army, and Airforce issued by Lambert & Butler in 1939. It serves as a visual reminder of the rich heritage and unique customs that define military culture.
The seaman's uniform represents more than just clothing; it embodies discipline, honor, and camaraderie among sailors. Through this striking image, viewers are transported back in time to an era when uniforms held deep symbolic meaning within maritime communities.
