Harold Whitlock walked his greatest race on 5 August 1936, when he won the 50 kilometres race in the Olympic Games at Berlin, in the record time of 4 hrs 30 mins 41 secs. Came into prominence by winning the National 50 kilometres Championship in 1933, and since then has never looked back. Won the London to Brighton race in years 1934/35/36, being the first man to beat eight hours over this course in 1935. He made successful attacks on the world's time and distance records up to 51 miles, which he covered in an eight-hour walk at the White City in October 1935.
