8668118 Do You Know: What famous school was founded by a grocer? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: What famous school was founded by a grocer? Rugby, of the world renowned "Tom Brown's School Days", was founded by Lawrence Sheriff, a grocer who enjoyed the patronage and personal favour of Queen Elizabeth. The school began life in 1567, in Sheriff's "mansyon house", and it is stated a Royal witticism was perpetuated in the grocer's armorial bearings, because the Queen made a joke about the dates Sheriff sold: the crest used by Rugby School consists of a lion's paw holding a bunch of dates. Rugby football was born at this school, by accident, and a tablet commemorates Ellis's exploit, now adopted by half the world. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant colour lithograph print depicts a fascinating piece of trivia: the founding of Rugby School by a grocer named Lawrence Sheriff. Established in 1567, this prestigious school was originally located in Sheriff's own mansion house and enjoyed the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I. The school's crest, featuring a lion's paw holding dates, is said to be inspired by a joke made by the Queen about Sheriff's trade.
Rugby School holds historical significance not only for its academic excellence but also for being the birthplace of rugby football. Legend has it that the sport was invented at Rugby School by accident, with a tablet commemorating William Webb Ellis' famous exploit still standing today.
This illustration is part of a set of "Do You Know?" cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939, aimed at educating and entertaining collectors with interesting facts and trivia. It serves as a reminder that knowledge can come from unexpected places and that even humble beginnings can lead to great achievements. The colourful depiction captures the spirit of learning and discovery, making it an intriguing addition to any collection or educational setting.
