During the Roman supremacy in Phoenicia, Septimius Severus and Pescennius Niger were competitors for the empire. EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful lithograph captures the brutal aftermath of the plunder from Tyre during the Roman supremacy in Phoenicia. The competition between Septimius Severus and Pescennius Niger for the empire led to devastating consequences for the inhabitants of Tyre. As Niger's Mauritanian light troops descended upon the city, they unleashed a wave of barbarity, pillaging, burning, and slaughtering its people. The flames rise high as buildings crumble in the background, symbolizing the destruction wrought by greed and ambition. The artist Edwin A. Morrow skillfully conveys the chaos and despair that engulfed Tyre during this dark chapter in history. This haunting image serves as a stark reminder of the horrors of war and conquest, where innocent lives are often sacrificed in pursuit of power. It is a poignant reflection on humanity's capacity for cruelty and devastation. As we gaze upon this print, we are compelled to contemplate our own role in shaping history and consider how we can strive towards a more peaceful and just world. Plunder from Tyre stands as a testament to resilience in the face of adversity and a call to remember those who have suffered at the hands of tyranny.
