Portrait of Sarah Scarvell, nee Redmond, 1855 (oil on canvas)

5914762 Portrait of Sarah Scarvell, nee Redmond, 1855 (oil on canvas) by Noble, Richard (b.1812); 73.3x60.8 cm; Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales; (add.info.: Sarah Scarvell, nee Redmond (1809-1873), was born in Sydney, N.S.W. the second daughter of emancipists Edward Redmond (1766?-1840) and Winefred Redmond, nee Dowling (1775?-1861). Winefred married Edward Redmond, her second husband, in 1811. They had two daughters, Mary (b. 1807) and Sarah. Winefreds son from her first marriage Jean de Riveau (b. 1803) became known as John Redmond.
Sarah married Captain John Larking Scarvell (1791-1861) at St Jamess Church, Sydney, in March 1828. It was the second marriage for Captain Scarvell. His first wife, Isabella (nee Campbell), had died at sea and was buried in St Philips Church, Sydney, in January 1828. Captain Scarvell retired from the East India Company shortly after his marriage to Sarah and they resided at Clare House (Killarney), in Oakville, N.S.W.. They had ten children, of whom eight survived infancy.
In 1855 John Scarvell commissioned artist Richard Noble to paint individual portraits of his family. Over the course of the year while residing at Clare House, Noble completed portraits of Sarah and John Larking Scarvell (ML 1250), and the six eldest Scarvell children: John Redmond Barnes (1830-1855) (ML 1194); Sidney (1832-1875); George (1834-1877); Edward Augustus (1835-1883); Sarah Winefred Isabella Mary (1837-1929) (ML 1339); and Elizabeth Mary (1840-1907) (ML 1195).
Sarah Scarvell died in July 1873 at her residence Leswell, in Edgecliff Road, aged 64 years.); Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales; British, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, titled "Portrait of Sarah Scarvell, nee Redmond, 1855" is a stunning example of Richard Noble's artistic talent. Painted with oil on canvas, this piece showcases the beauty and grace of Sarah Scarvell, nee Redmond. Sarah Scarvell was born in Sydney in 1809 to emancipists Edward Redmond and Winefred Redmond. She married Captain John Larking Scarvell in 1828 at St James's Church, Sydney. After retiring from the East India Company, they settled at Clare House (Killarney) in Oakville, New South Wales. Commissioned by her husband John Scarvell in 1855, artist Richard Noble painted individual portraits of their family members throughout the year. This particular painting captures Sarah's elegance and poise as she gazes confidently into the distance. The couple had ten children together; however, only eight survived infancy. The six eldest children were also immortalized through separate portraits completed by Noble during his stay at Clare House. Sadly, Sarah passed away in July 1873 at Leswell residence on Edgecliff Road when she was 64 years old. Her legacy lives on through this remarkable artwork that portrays her timeless beauty and serves as a testament to her place within Australian history. Currently housed at the Mitchell Library within the State Library of New South Wales, this print offers viewers a glimpse into the life and times of an influential figure from Australia's past.
