490815 Tilting suit, c.1560-80 (steel, leather straps & brass rivets) by German School, (16th century); Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Although all from the same period, not all parts are from the same suit. The suit shows the asymmetry of jousting armour. The participants rode along a wall-like barrier known as a tilt with their left sides facing one another. Consequently, armour on that side of the body had to be thicker. Note the large plate (grandguard) over the left shoulder for extra protection. Also, the breathing holes in the helmet were placed on the right side (farthest from an opponents lance) to avoid injuries from splinters. The bracket attached to the right breastplate is called the lance-rest, a shock-absorbing support designed to accommodate the lance when couched under the right armpit.); Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Tilting suit, dating back to the late 16th century. Crafted by the German School, this suit of armor is on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The asymmetry of jousting armor is beautifully depicted in this photograph. During jousting tournaments, participants would ride along a wall-like barrier called a tilt with their left sides facing each other. As a result, the armor on that side had to be thicker for enhanced protection. Take note of the grandguard - an imposing large plate positioned over the left shoulder to provide additional safeguarding. The helmet also features strategically placed breathing holes on its right side, farthest from an opponent's lance, ensuring safety against splinters and injuries. An intriguing feature visible in this image is the lance-rest attached to the right breastplate. This shock-absorbing support was designed specifically to accommodate a couched lance under the right armpit during intense jousts. This historic artifact not only represents strength and resilience but also embodies chivalry and medieval warfare practices. It serves as a testament to both craftsmanship and functionality within metalwork during those times. With its rich historical significance and intricate design details, this Tilting suit transports us back into an era filled with knights clad in protective armor engaging in thrilling equestrian sports known as jousting – truly capturing our imagination and fascination with medieval times.
