Battle of Copenhagen, 1801 (oil on canvas)
GIA1153737 Battle of Copenhagen, 1801 (oil on canvas) by Danish School, (19th century); Museum of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark; (add.info.: The Battle of Copenhagen (Danish: slaget pAa Reden) was an engagement which saw a British fleet under the command of Admiral Sir Hyde Parker fight and strategically defeat a Danish-Norwegian fleet anchored just off Copenhagen on 2 April 1801. Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson led the main attack. He famously is reputed to have disobeyed Sir Hyde Parkers order to withdraw by holding the telescope to his blind eye to look at the signals from Parker. But Parkers signals had given him permission to withdraw at his discretion, and Nelson declined. His action in proceeding resulted in the destruction of many of the Dano-Norwegian ships before a truce was agreed. Copenhagen is often considered to be Nelsons hardest-fought battle.); eGiancarlo Costa; Danish, out of copyright

The battle depicted here was a significant engagement between a British fleet led by Admiral Sir Hyde Parker and a Danish-Norwegian fleet anchored just off Copenhagen. Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson played a crucial role in this battle, defying orders to withdraw by holding his telescope to his blind eye to examine signals from Parker. Nelson's bold decision resulted in the destruction of numerous Dano-Norwegian ships before both sides agreed upon a truce. The painting offers viewers an aerial view of the harbor, with boats, tugs, and warships filling the scene. The cityscape serves as a backdrop for this fierce clash between naval forces amidst billowing gunsmoke. Birds soaring above add an element of serenity juxtaposed against the chaos below. With its vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail, this artwork brings history alive while honoring those who fought valiantly during this pivotal moment in Scandinavian history.
