View of Positano (Unesco world heritage), on the Amalfi coast, Italy
Positano is a village and comune on the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana), in Campania, Italy.
Positano was a port of the Amalfi Republic in medieval times, and prospered during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. By the mid-nineteenth century, however, the town had fallen on hard times. More than half the population emigrated, mostly to America.
Positano was a relatively poor fishing village during the first half of the twentieth century. It began to attract large numbers of tourists in the 1950s, especially after John Steinbeck published his essay about Positano in 1953: Positano bites deep. Steinbeck wrote: It is a dream place that isnat quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking view of Positano, a UNESCO World Heritage site located on the stunning Amalfi Coast in Italy. The village and comune of Positano hold a rich history as it was once a bustling port during medieval times under the Amalfi Republic. However, by the mid-nineteenth century, economic hardships led to mass emigration, with more than half of its population seeking new opportunities in America. Despite its past struggles, Positano transformed from a humble fishing village into a popular tourist destination starting in the 1950s. Its allure grew even stronger after renowned author John Steinbeck published an essay about his experience there, describing it as a dream-like place that lingers in one's memory long after leaving. In this tranquil scene captured by Frans Sellies, we see an idyllic coastal town nestled amidst picturesque mountains and overlooking the crystal-clear Mediterranean Sea. The vibrant colors of the houses and domed church create a postcard-worthy image against the clear blue sky. This photograph perfectly showcases Positano's unique architecture and Italian culture while highlighting its status as an international landmark. With no people visible in this shot, viewers can imagine themselves strolling through narrow streets lined with lush bushes and trees or lounging on one of Positano's famous beaches. It is no wonder why this charming town has become such a sought-after tourist resort for those seeking sunny vacations filled with beauty and relaxation.
