In the early months of 1914, amidst the picturesque landscapes of Upavon, Fifth Course at Central Flying School witnessed an unexpected event. A farmer with a determined gaze stood alongside a cunning fox, as they both became part of a cull that would shape their destinies. Meanwhile, in bustling Hong Kong, health officers took charge at a wholesale market. With precision and caution, they embarked on the daunting task of culling poultry to combat potential health risks. Underneath the marquee's sheltering embrace, these officers worked tirelessly to ensure public safety. Traveling back in time to 1880s Australia, we find ourselves witnessing an intriguing spectacle - a kangaroo battue. Howard Willoughby's lithograph captures this unique hunting practice where men gather together with dogs to hunt badgers deep within the woods. The pages turn once more and transport us to medieval times when Richard I unleashed his wrath upon captives as reprisal for past deeds. This chilling illustration from Bibliotheque des Croisades by J-F. Michaud serves as a reminder of the brutal nature that sometimes accompanies power. A different kind of competition unfolds before our eyes as The Cambridge Eight rowers glide through serene waters during a shell race. Their synchronized movements symbolize unity and determination towards victory. As history progresses into modernity, mankind seeks ways to combat diseases that threaten communities. In one such endeavor, creatures likely carrying infection are culled from infected districts - an arduous but necessary task undertaken by brave individuals seeking public welfare. Scroby Sands seals in Norfolk faced dire consequences for their net-ripping actions; their fate sealed by those who sought justice for damaged livelihoods caused by these mischievous marine mammals. Venturing into Arctic Circle territories during the late 19th century reveals yet another aspect of culling: polar bear hunting. Two courageous cubs defend their fallen mother against hunters' bullets, a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between man and nature.
