Albert, Maria, and Bert Kotter, 1928. Creator: Unknown
Albert, Maria, and Bert Kotter, 1928. The "Kuzbass" autonomous industrial colony was created in 1921. It was organized by American workers, who took on the obligation of inviting from the United States and Western Europe some eight thousand skilled workers and specialists to industrialize the Kuzbass. The Soviet government turned over to the colonists a number of Kemerovo mine shafts and an unfinished coking plant. To recruit volunteers to work in Siberia, a "Kuzbass Bureau" was opened in the middle of New York City, and an information bulletin began to be published in the United States. Between January 1922 and December 1923, however, only 566 persons arrived for work in the Kuzbass. The colonists included emigrants from America, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Australia, Jamaica, Indonesia, and other countries as well. Kemerovo Oblast Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time - the Kotter family in 1928, part of the "Kuzbass" autonomous industrial colony. Created by American workers in 1921, this unique settlement aimed to bring skilled workers and specialists from the United States and Western Europe to industrialize Siberia's Kemerovo region.
Albert, Maria, and Bert Kotter stand proudly together in this image, embodying the spirit of adventure and determination that characterized the colonists who left their homes for a new life in Russia. The young boy Bert looks up at his parents with curiosity and admiration, while Albert and Maria exude a sense of hope for their family's future.
As pioneers in a foreign land, the Kotters represent not only their own story but also that of countless others who sought opportunity beyond borders. Their smiles reflect resilience in the face of challenges and unity amidst unfamiliar surroundings.
Through this portrait, we glimpse into a chapter of history where courage met ambition, where dreams were pursued against all odds. The legacy of families like the Kotters lives on as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance.
