Bulgarians, 1862. Sheet 10 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Bulgarians," is an exquisite image taken from Sheet 10 of the ethnographic album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. The album, dedicated to Tsar Alexander II, was created to commemorate the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire. The work, the brainchild of German ethnographer Gustav-Fedor Pauli, consists of two volumes. The first volume showcases 62 color illustrations depicting various ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional attire. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities of the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map. In this particular image, we see a group of Bulgarians, a significant ethnic group residing in the Russian Empire during the 19th century. The Bulgarians are dressed in their traditional clothing, with the men wearing long, flowing robes, and the women wearing embroidered vests and skirts. Their distinctive headwear, including the women's headdresses and the men's felt hats, add to their unique appearance. This photograph is a testament to the rich cultural diversity that existed within the Russian Empire during the 1860s. It provides a glimpse into the past, offering a window into the lives of the Bulgarians and other ethnic groups that once called the empire home. The album, as a whole, represents a significant contribution to the field of ethnography and anthropology, reflecting the state of historical and anthropological knowledge of the time.
