Carnival Races at Rome, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Carnival Races at Rome, 1856. The horses are now at their starting posts, without riders...At the start a rope is placed across the street, the horses being led close up to it. Those trained to it wait for the drop, and then fly off like an arrow from a bow. Some try this too soon, and inevitably perform a somersault, dragging with them the hapless groom in all the glory of his holiday costume. Some, from nervousness, let go their best opportunity, and are left far behind, exposed to the raillery of the spectators, who encourage only the successful; soon these are stopped in their course, and lucky is the rightful owner if he ever procures his horse again'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Carnival Races at Rome, 1856: A Thrilling Traditional Event of the Nineteenth Century This photograph, taken in 1856, depicts the exhilarating scene of the Carnival Races in Rome. The horses, without riders, are poised at their starting posts, their eyes focused intently on the rope that lies across the street. The crowd, dressed in their holiday finery, eagerly awaits the start of the race. At the signal, the rope is dropped, and the horses take off like arrows from a bow. Some, trained to respond to the rope, fly forward, while others, less experienced, may attempt to start too soon, resulting in a somersault, dragging their grooms along with them. Nervous horses may hesitate, losing valuable time and falling behind. The successful horses are soon brought to a halt, and their relieved owners bask in the cheers and applause of the spectators. The unlucky owners, meanwhile, are left to navigate the crowd and hope to recover their wayward mounts. This engraving was published in the Illustrated London News, offering a glimpse into the cultural events of Italy during the nineteenth century. The Carnival Races at Rome were a beloved tradition, attracting visitors from all over Europe. This photograph captures the excitement, the energy, and the unpredictability of this annual event, making it a fascinating window into the past.
