The Cholera at Malta: sanitary encampment of the 4th (King's Own) Regiment on the Floriana, 1865. Creator: Unknown
The Cholera at Malta: sanitary encampment of the 4th (King's Own) Regiment on the Floriana, 1865. 'In the Number of our Journal for the 23rd of September we gave an Illustration of the encampment of the 100th (Prince of Wales's Royal Canadian) Regiment on the glacis of Fort Manoel, at Malta, that regiment having, by command of his Excellency the Governor, Sir Henry Storks, been removed from barracks and placed under canvas to benefit the health of the men and to prevent their being attacked by the cholera, which has lately visited both the Maltese population and the British troops in that island. We now present a similar Illustration from a photograph sent us by Captain C. Breton, of the encampment of the 4th (King's Own) Regiment in the Floriana Parade-ground, near their own barracks. The tents under the trees have a melancholy interest from the fact that numbers of this gallant regiment died in them while the cholera was raging in the island'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865

EDITORS COMMENTS
**The Cholera at Malta: Sanitary Encampment of the 4th (King's Own) Regiment on the Floriana, 1865**
In this poignant photograph print, a sanitary encampment of the 4th (King's Own) Regiment is seen situated in the Floriana Parade-ground near their own barracks. The image captures a somber moment in history as it was taken during an outbreak of cholera that ravaged Malta and affected both local residents and British troops stationed on the island.
The photograph, sent to us by Captain C. Breton, shows rows of tents pitched under the shade of trees, where many members of this gallant regiment ultimately succumbed to the deadly disease. The scene is a poignant reminder of the devastating impact that cholera had on those who served and lived in Malta during this period.
As part of an effort to prevent further spread of the disease, British troops were relocated from barracks to sanitary encampments under canvas, as seen here with the 4th (King's Own) Regiment. The Illustrated London News published a similar illustration featuring the 100th (Prince of Wales' Royal Canadian) Regiment in their September issue.
This photograph print serves as a powerful visual record of this significant event and pays tribute to those who served during these challenging times.
