Fleet of Chinese junks, with H.M.S. Opossum, preparing to attack pirates at How-Chow, 1865. Creator: Unknown
Fleet of Chinese junks, with H.M.S. Opossum, preparing to attack pirates at How-Chow, 1865. 'It was lately mentioned in our Journal that the pirates who infest the China seas have during the past twelvemonth committed some very daring acts in the vicinity of Hainan, attacking merchant-ships of considerable size under the English, German, and other European flags; and that consequently her Majesty's gun-boat Opossum, commanded by Lieutenant St. John, was sent down to co-operate with the Mandarins for the purpose of capturing the pirates. The accompanying Illustration shows the Chinese fleet, under Admiral Wang-Yung-Yow, with the Opossum in company, preparing for the attack at How-Chow. The Opossum on this occasion captured one pirate junk, heavily armed, which was taken on the 10th of July last; but as there is, no doubt, a nest of these daring outlaws somewhere about Hainan, the Opossum and other gun-boats are about to be sent to Hainan for the purpose of acting, in conjunction with the Chinese Admiral, for suppressing piracy in those parts. The expedition will be commanded by Lieutenant St. John.' From "Illustrated London News", 1865

**A Fearsome Confrontation: Chinese Junks and British Gun-Boat Prepare to Take on Pirates**
In this dramatic print, a fleet of Chinese junks, led by Admiral Wang-Yung-Yow, prepares for battle alongside H.M.S. Opossum, commanded by Lieutenant St. John. The scene is set in the waters off How-Chow in 1865 as they prepare to take on notorious pirates that have been terrorizing merchant ships flying European flags.
The illustration captures the tense moment before the attack, with cannons loaded and crew members readying for battle. In the foreground, H.M.S. Opossum stands out against a backdrop of Chinese junks, their intricate sails billowing in the wind. The print also highlights one of the pirates' prized possessions: an heavily armed junk captured by Lieutenant St. John's gun-boat on July 10th.
This historic moment marks a significant joint effort between British and Chinese forces to suppress piracy in the China seas. As tensions remain high, it is clear that this expedition will be crucial in restoring order to these waters. This striking print offers a unique glimpse into an era of international cooperation and naval warfare during the mid-19th century.
