EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite folio from the Bhagavata Purana, an ancient Hindu scripture, dates back to the 16th century, around the 1530s. The recto side of the print depicts Krishna and Balarama, two central figures in Vaishnavism, the branch of Hinduism that reveres Krishna as a supreme god, engaging in playful activities with the cowherd men or Gopas. Krishna, with his characteristic blue skin, is shown standing in the center, playing a flute, while Balarama, his brother, sits on a large stone, holding a plow. The Gopas, dressed in simple loincloths and engaged in farming activities, have gathered around Krishna and Balarama, seemingly lost in the divine presence of their leaders. The scene is set against a backdrop of lush greenery, with trees, plants, and birds adding to the serene and idyllic atmosphere. The use of opaque watercolor and ink on paper adds depth and texture to the image, making it a visual treat for the eyes. The folio is believed to have originated from either Delhi in India or Rajasthan in North India, and is now a part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The image is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of South East Asia and the enduring appeal of Hindu mythology.
