EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph print depicts a memorial erected in Maidstone, England, in honor of the brave Captain Lewis Edward Nolan. The monument was raised in memory of Nolan, who tragically fell at the head of the Light Cavalry Brigade during the Charge at Balaclava on October 25, 1854, during the Crimean War. Nolan, who was 36 years old at the time of his death, had served on the staff of General Sir George Berkeley in India and was also an Aide-de-Camp to Major-General Airey, the Quartermaster-General to the Forces in the Crimea. The inscription on the memorial reads, "In Memory of Lewis Edward Nolan, Captain in the 15th or King's Hussars, And A.D.C. to Major-General Airey, Quartermaster-General to the Forces In the Crimea. He Fell at the Head of The Light Cavalry Brigade In the Charge at Balaclava, On the 25th October, 1854, Aged 36." The memorial was erected by General Sir George Berkeley, General Airey, and Nolan's brother officers and friends as a tribute to one of the most gallant, intelligent, and energetic officers in Her Majesty's Service. This poignant image was published in the Illustrated London News in 1856, providing a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the sacrifices made by brave soldiers like Captain Nolan during times of war.
