Opening of the Whitehaven and Furness Junction Railway - Furness Abbey, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Opening of the Whitehaven and Furness Junction Railway - Furness Abbey, 1850. The splendid ruins of Furness Abbey, so striking from their antiquity, beauty, and grandeur, are considered of themselves of sufficient interest to repay the trouble of a visit; and the opening of this line will, no doubt, ere long, render them as familiar as they are wonderful and imposing...the spectator finds his interest divided between the grandeur of the ruins and the surpassing beauty of the valley in which they stand. Their grandeur may be imagined, when we state that they occupy a space of more than sixty acres. The architecture is a mixture of Norman and early English'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850
