Plaque left on the Moon, Apollo II mission, July 1969. Inscription on part of the Eagle. The Apollo 11 Lunar Module, code named Eagle, with US astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin on board, landed in the Sea of Tranquillity on 20 July 1969. Apollo 11 was the fifth manned Apollo mission, and was the first to land on the Moon. They left behind a plaque on the leg of the Lunar Modules descent stage, which reads: Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon, July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind
