The Protagonists of Dayton, Tennessee, USA, 1925
The Protagonists of Dayton, Tennessee, USA, 1925. American lawyers Clarence Darrow (1857-1938) and William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) at the Scopes Trial. Also known as the Scopes Monkey Trial the case was a challenge to the Butler Act, which made it unlawful to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals in state-funded schools and universities in the state of Tennessee. Bryan represented the prosecution and Darrow the defence and the case had such a high profile that it was broadcast across the nation. The defendant, a high school teacher named John T Scopes (1900-1970), was found guilty of teaching Darwins theories of evolution, in breach of the Butler Act, and was fined $100, but the verdict was set aside on appeal by the Tennessee Supreme Court on a technicality. Bryan died five days after the conclusion of the original trial

The Protagonists of Dayton, Tennessee, USA, 1925 - A Historic Clash of Beliefs
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a defining moment in American history - the Scopes Trial of 1925. In this iconic image, we see two towering figures who represented opposing sides in the courtroom battle that captivated the nation. On one side stands Clarence Darrow, renowned for his sharp legal mind and progressive views. He fearlessly defended John T. Scopes, a high school teacher accused of violating Tennessee's Butler Act by teaching evolution instead of biblical creationism. Darrow passionately argued for academic freedom and scientific progress. Opposite him is William Jennings Bryan, a charismatic orator and staunch defender of religious fundamentalism. As the prosecutor in this landmark trial, Bryan fought to uphold traditional Christian teachings against what he saw as dangerous ideas challenging faith. The clash between these two intellectual giants was broadcast nationwide and became known as the "Scopes Monkey Trial". The outcome had far-reaching implications for education and religion in America. Ultimately, Scopes was found guilty but later acquitted on appeal due to a technicality. Tragically, just five days after the conclusion of this historic trial, Bryan passed away. This evocative print transports us back to that pivotal moment when deeply held beliefs collided within an American courtroom – forever leaving an indelible mark on our nation's history.
