Schweizer SGU 2-22EK, 1946-1966. Creator: Schweizer Aircraft Corporation
Sailplane used by Scotty McCray for aerobatics, silver, red and blue; ca. 1960. Immediately after World War II ended, Earnest Schweizer designed the SGU 2-22EK. Earnest and his brothers, Paul and William, hoped to produce and sell an inexpensive, easy-to-fly, two-seat training glider built from aluminum that could operate from small airfields. The Schweizer Aircraft Corporation built 257 examples of the 2-22 from 1946 to 1967. Thousands of people acquired the skill to fly motorless aircraft at the controls of the 2-22 and many of these airplanes remain active in 2003. Byron G. " Scotty" McCray flew this Schweizer 2-22EK from 1966 to 1973 at airshows in the United States, Canada, and the Bahamas. His routine began at about 760-912 m (2, 500-3, 000 ft). After releasing from the tow airplane, McCray looped, rolled, and spun the 2-22 down to a silent landing. He synchronized his maneuvers to the theme music from the Hollywood film Born Free while audiences heard the melody booming through the airshow public address system

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Schweizer SGU 2-22EK, a remarkable sailplane that left an indelible mark on aviation history. Designed by Earnest Schweizer immediately after World War II, this silver, red, and blue beauty was created with the vision of providing an affordable and user-friendly training glider for aspiring pilots. Constructed from aluminum and capable of operating from small airfields, the SGU 2-22 quickly became a beloved aircraft. The Schweizer Aircraft Corporation produced a total of 257 examples of this exceptional glider between 1946 and 1967. Thousands of individuals honed their flying skills aboard the reliable controls of the 2-22, ensuring its enduring legacy even in modern times. One pilot who truly showcased the capabilities of this magnificent sailplane was Byron G. "Scotty". McCray. From 1966 to 1973, McCray mesmerized audiences across the United States, Canada, and the Bahamas with his aerobatic displays in his trusty Schweizer 2-22EK. Starting at altitudes ranging from approximately 760 to 912 meters (2500 to 3000 feet), McCray fearlessly executed loops, rolls, and spins before gracefully descending for a silent landing. Adding an extra touch of magic to his performances was McCray's synchronization with the theme music from Hollywood film Born Free booming through airshow public address systems. This combination captivated spectators as they witnessed both visual artistry in flight and auditory enchantment filling their ears. The Schweizer SGU 2-22EK remains not only a testament to innovative design but also a symbol of passion for aviation excellence embodied by pilots like Scotty McCray.
