The Seal of the National Shakspeare Committee, 1864. Creator: Unknown
The Seal of the National Shakspeare Committee, 1864. Commemoration of the Tercentenary of Shakespeare's birth. 'We have engraved the design of the official seal of the National Shakspeare Committee. It is by Mr. John Leighton. It exhibits the Stratford bust of the poet, supported by the Muses of Tragedy and Comedy, both of them furnished with wings, and crowned with tongues of fire. The emblem of Eternity, a Serpent coiled in a circle, encompasses this group. The "Swan of Avon" is below it; while above it are the arms of Shakspeare, and the monograms of Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. Around the whole are inscribed the well-known sentences: "He was a man, take him for all in all, We shall not look upon his like again. Not for an age, but for all time".' From "Illustrated London News", 1864

**Commemorating a Literary Legend: The Seal of the National Shakspeare Committee (1864)**
This striking print captures the official seal of the National Shakspeare Committee, created to commemorate the tercentenary of William Shakespeare's birth in 1564. Designed by John Leighton, this intricate design features Stratford busts of Shakespeare supported by winged Muses of Tragedy and Comedy, their tongues aglow with fiery inspiration. A serpent coiled around a circle represents Eternity, while below lies the iconic "Swan of Avon" - an enduring symbol of the Bard's legacy. The arms of Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria flank this group, underscoring Shakespeare's timeless appeal across centuries and monarchs.
The accompanying quote from Macbeth ("He was a man, take him for all in all...") serves as a poignant tribute to the playwright's unparalleled genius, which continues to captivate audiences worldwide. This print offers a unique glimpse into the cultural celebrations of 19th-century Britain, where Shakespeare's works remained an integral part of national identity and artistic heritage.
