The Shakspeare Commemoration at Stratford-On-Avon: scene from "Romeo And Juliet"..., 1864. Creator: Unknown
The Shakspeare Commemoration at Stratford-On-Avon: scene from "Romeo And Juliet", as performed in the Festival Pavilion, 1864. Celebrating the tercentenary of William Shakespeare's birth. 'The tragedy of "Romeo and Juliet" was represented...we have engraved a sketch of the last scene of the acting version of that play, in which, after the death of Paris, the unhappy pair of lovers, at the entrance of Juliet's tomb, meet each other in a way that Shakspeare knew nothing about; for Shakspeare's account is that Romeo was dead of the poison before Juliet awoke. Another compliment to English Shakspeare is the appearance of Mdlle. Stella Colas as Juliet: the Romeo is Mr. Nelson'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
A poignant moment in time: The Shakespeare Commemoration at Stratford-on-Avon (1864). As part of the tercentenary celebrations honoring William Shakespeare's birth, a dramatic scene from "Romeo and Juliet" was reimagined on stage. In this engraved illustration from the Illustrated London News, we see Romeo (played by Mr. Nelson) and Juliet (brilliantly portrayed by Mdlle. Stella Colas), reunited in death at the entrance of Juliet's tomb. The tragic love story unfolds as Shakespeare knew it not - with Romeo already deceased from poison before Juliet awakens to find her beloved gone forever. This powerful scene captures the essence of English literature and drama, paying homage to the Bard himself.
