EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a sketch of the journey between Balat and Adranos in Turkey, taken around 1915. The map showcases the path traveled by Mark Sykes, a British writer, soldier, and diplomatic advisor during his exploration through Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Persia, and Turkey. At that time, these regions were part of the vast Ottoman Empire. Mark Sykes (1879-1919) had an illustrious career as he served as an honorary attache to the British Embassy in Constantinople from 1905 to 1906. He was later elected to parliament and worked in the Intelligence department of the War Office during World War I. Tragically, he succumbed to the Spanish flu at just 39 years old. The sketch is sourced from "The Caliphs Last Heritage: A Short History of the Turkish Empire" written by Lieutenant Colonel Sir Mark Sykes himself and published by Macmillan & Co in London in 1915. This image not only provides insight into Sykes' extensive travels but also offers a glimpse into Anatolia's stunning geographical features. The mountainous terrain depicted on this map highlights both its beauty and challenges faced by explorers like Sykes during their expeditions. Stanford's Geographical Establishment has preserved this historical artifact which serves as a testament to Sir Mark Sykes' remarkable life journey through various countries within Asia Minor or what we now know as modern-day Middle East.
