The Staff of the Expedition: Doctor Grinevetskii, the Official Dmitriev, the Foreman... 1889. Creator: Unknown
The Staff of the Expedition: Doctor Grinevetskii, the Official Dmitriev, the Foreman Pavlov, and Nine Cossacks, 1889. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage in 1889 of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album suggest that it belonged to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The album contains photographs of the local Chukchi people and views of the harbor Petropavlovsk, the village of Nikol'skoe on Bering Island, and Novo-Mariinskii, where construction of the first building is shown. This photograph, titled 'The Staff of the Expedition: Doctor Grinevetskii, the Official Dmitriev, the Foreman Pavlov, and Nine Cossacks, 1889,' offers a glimpse into the historic Arctic voyage of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and the construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The image, from a collection that once belonged to Emperor Nicholas II, showcases a group of key personnel involved in the expedition. Doctor Grinevetskii, the expedition's physician, stands proudly in the center, dressed in his medical attire. To his left, Official Dmitriev, clad in a naval uniform, maintains a direct gaze towards the camera. Foreman Pavlov, wearing a traditional Cossack outfit, is positioned to the doctor's right, with nine Cossack men standing behind him. All ten men gaze intently at the camera, their strong and determined expressions conveying the challenges and adventures of their frontier work. The photograph, dating back to the late 19th century, is a testament to the activities and professions of the time. The men's diverse apparel, from the doctor's medical attire to the Cossacks' traditional garb, highlights the unique blend of cultures and occupations present during the expedition.
