The Town and Castle of Gaeta - from a drawing by S. Read, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Town and Castle of Gaeta, [Italy], - from a drawing by S. Read, 1860. Gaeta, a fortified town of 14, 000 inhabitants...is situated in the Terra di Lavoro...between Capua and Naples. It consists of irregular works, rising in terraces one above the other, on a rocky headland of the Mediterranean coast. On the land side the narrow approach is closed by strong batteries; a fort commands the harbour, and at the extremity of this point there is the old tower called Rolando's'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Gaeta, a fortified town of 14,000 inhabitants, is nestled in the Terra di Lavoro region of Italy, between Capua and Naples. The town, depicted in this 1860 drawing by S. Read, is situated on a rocky headland overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The irregular layout of Gaeta rises in terraces one above the other, with a narrow approach on the land side protected by strong batteries. A fort commands the harbor, and at the extremity of the point, the old tower known as Rolando's Tower can be found. Gaeta's rich history is reflected in its fortifications, which have withstood numerous invasions throughout the centuries. The town's religious heritage is also evident, with monks and other religious figures depicted in the scene. The natural beauty of the area is showcased through the inclusion of palm trees and other plants. Gaeta was a significant port town during the nineteenth century, with trade and commerce playing a crucial role in its development. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, provides a glimpse into the town's past, offering a window into its unique history and character.
