William James Glackens Girl Green Turban c. 1913
William James Glackens: Girl in Green Turban, William James Glackens, c. 1913, Oil on canvas, Philadelphia native William Glackens is best known for his early work as a member of the Ashcan School, a group of New York artists who focused on realistic scenes of urban life. This work dates from later in his career, when he had decided that being a true modernist was more about bold form and color than about gritty subject matter. Glackens was continually inspired by the formal innovations of the European avant-garde. Here, for example, he seems to be channeling Matisse in his use of jarring color and decorative patterns. Overall: 24 x 18 in. (61 x 45.7 cm)
