Dressed for the Abbey

Fashions among the royal wedding guests at the marriage of Princess Margaret to Anthony Armstrong Jones (Earl Snowdon) on 6 May 1960 at Westminster Abbey. On the left, the Hon, Lady Eccles, wife of Sir David Eccles, Minister for Education, wore a navy and black doodle print silk dress and duster coat lined with white silk by Mattli. Her high ribbon velvet banded turban of navy tulle by Simone Mirman drew much admiration. On the right, the Countess of Dalkeith wore an ecru re-embroidered lace dress, the neckline outlined with toning satin which was also used to cover the belt by Victor Stiebel. The Breton hat of ecru coloured tulle was also by Simone Mirman. Date: 1960

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, the fashionable guests at the wedding of Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, to Anthony Armstrong-Jones (Earl Snowdon) on May 6, 1960, at Westminster Abbey, are showcased in their elegant attire. On the left, Lady Eccles, wife of Sir David Eccles, Minister for Education, dons a striking navy and black doodle print silk dress and duster coat. The dress, designed by Mattli, is lined with white silk, adding an element of sophistication and elegance. Her high ribbon velvet banded turban of navy tulle, created by Simone Mirman, drew much admiration from the onlookers. On the right, the Countess of Dalkeith graces the scene in an ecru re-embroidered lace dress. The neckline of the dress is outlined with toning satin, and the belt is also covered in satin by Victor Stiebel. The Breton hat of ecru coloured tulle, another creation by Simone Mirman, completes her elegant ensemble. This photograph captures the essence of the 1960s royal wedding, with its timeless fashion and the elegance and grandeur of the event. The guests' outfits, showcasing the best of British design from the era, add to the overall charm and allure of this historic occasion. The photograph is a testament to the enduring appeal of fashion and the role it plays in shaping the memories of significant events in history.
