This vintage lantern slide captures a poignant moment in maritime history as the crew of a German destroyer takes to their boats in Scapa Flow, Orkney, on the 21st of June, 1919. Following the end of World War I, the German High Seas Fleet, consisting of battleships, cruisers, and other warships, were interned in Scapa Flow as part of the peace treaty. On this fateful day, the German sailors, having grown disillusioned with the harsh conditions of their internment and the uncertainty of their future, made the decision to scuttle their ships rather than return them to Germany under the terms of the treaty. In this image, the crew members can be seen making their way to their small boats, their faces a mix of determination and trepidation as they prepare to abandon their destroyer. The destroyer, along with the rest of the German fleet, would soon lie sunken at the bottom of the flow, a testament to the events of that day.
