As the summer of 1939 drew to a close, the members of Pwllheli Golf Club in Wales gathered for their weekly round of golf, blissfully unaware of the looming shadows that would soon engulf their idyllic world. In this charming cartoon illustration by Mel, the golfers are depicted with their characteristic quirks and humour, each one a unique caricature of the human spirit. The sun casts a warm glow over the lush green fairways, the tranquil lake reflecting the vibrant colours of the scene. The cart, with its umbrella and golf bags, adds a touch of whimsy to the image. This was the last in a weekly series of such illustrations, a cherished tradition that would be put on hold as the inexorable march of history intervened. The 1930s, a decade of relative peace and prosperity, were about to give way to the tumultuous and uncertain years of war. The golf clubs, once the pride of the members, would be silenced as the clamour of conflict drowned out the gentle sounds of the game. This poignant sketch serves as a poignant reminder of a time long past, a time when life seemed simpler, and the world seemed a little less complicated.
