Sempill British Aviation Mission to Japan
Aerial view taken from Moth on flight from The Lizard to Stag Lane, Sep 1929. William Francis Forbes-Sempill, 19th Lord Sempill AFC, AFRAeS (1893-1965) was a Scottish peer and record-breaking air pioneer who was later shown to have passed secret information to the Imperial Japanese military before the Second World War. In 1921, Sempill led an official military mission to Japan that showcased the latest British aircraft. In subsequent years he continued to aid the Imperial Japanese Navy in developing its Navy Air Service and began giving military secrets to the Japanese. Although his activities were uncovered by British Intelligence, Sempill was not prosecuted for spying and allowed to continue in public life. Date: 1929

This stunning aerial photograph, taken from a Moth aircraft on its journey from The Lizard to Stag Lane, captures the breathtaking view of the Japanese landscape below. William Francis Forbes-Sempill, 19th Lord Sempill AFC, AFRAeS (1893-1965), was a pioneering aviator and Scottish peer who led an official British military mission to Japan in 1921. His subsequent involvement with the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service and sharing of military secrets before World War II has raised controversy.
This rare glass lantern slide is part of the Royal Aeronautical Society Archive and provides a unique glimpse into this pivotal moment in aviation history. As we gaze out at the serene Japanese countryside, it's hard not to be struck by both the beauty of this scene and the complex web of intrigue that surrounds Lord Sempill's actions. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the power of human ingenuity and innovation, even as it raises questions about loyalty, duty, and morality.
