Sempill British Aviation Mission to Japan
Aerial view taken from Moth on flight from The Lizard to Stag Lane, Sep 1929. William Francis Forbes-Sempill, 19th Lord Sempill AFC, AFRAeS (1893-1965) was a Scottish peer and record-breaking air pioneer who was later shown to have passed secret information to the Imperial Japanese military before the Second World War. In 1921, Sempill led an official military mission to Japan that showcased the latest British aircraft. In subsequent years he continued to aid the Imperial Japanese Navy in developing its Navy Air Service and began giving military secrets to the Japanese. Although his activities were uncovered by British Intelligence, Sempill was not prosecuted for spying and allowed to continue in public life. Date: 1929

EDITORS COMMENTS
Take to the skies with Lord Sempill's historic flight over Japan in 1929. This stunning aerial photograph, taken from a Moth aircraft during his British Aviation Mission to Japan, captures the breathtaking landscape of the Japanese countryside as it was nearly a century ago. Led by William Francis Forbes-Sempill, 19th Lord Sempill AFC, AFRAeS (1893-1965), this mission aimed to showcase the latest British aircraft and share expertise with their Japanese counterparts.
As an accomplished aviator and record-breaker, Lord Sempill was instrumental in introducing modern air power to Japan. His efforts not only strengthened bilateral relations between Britain and Japan but also laid the groundwork for future military collaborations. However, his involvement with Imperial Japanese forces would later raise concerns about espionage and secrecy.
This remarkable image is part of the Royal Aeronautical Society Archive collection at Mary Evans Prints Online. It serves as a poignant reminder of both technological advancements and historical complexities that continue to shape our understanding of international relationships today.
