EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the first two prototypes of the Scottish Aviation Bulldog, G-AXEH and G-AXIG, are proudly displayed alongside the first production Bulldog, G-AYWN, for the Royal Swedish Air Force. This image offers a unique glimpse into the history of this versatile and iconic transport aircraft. The Scottish Aviation Bulldog, a twin-engine, high-wing aircraft, was initially designed and developed in the late 1950s by Scottish Aviation, a prominent Scottish aircraft manufacturer. The Bulldog was intended to meet the requirements of the British military for a light transport aircraft capable of operating from short and unimproved runways. G-AXEH, the first prototype, made its maiden flight on 25th February 1959, while G-AXIG, the second prototype, followed suit on 18th March of the same year. Both prototypes underwent extensive testing and evaluation, leading to several design improvements and modifications. The first production Bulldog, G-AYWN, was delivered to the Royal Swedish Air Force in 1961, marking the beginning of the Bulldog's successful military career. The Bulldog's rugged design, reliability, and versatility made it a popular choice among various military forces around the world, with over 500 units produced between 1959 and 1972. This photograph is a testament to the Bulldog's early beginnings and its enduring legacy as a trusted and capable military aircraft. The Scottish Aviation Bulldog continues to serve in various roles, demonstrating the remarkable engineering achievements of the past and the enduring appeal of aviation history.
