Fountain Pen Atom Meter. 2nd November 1949 Pocket meters to register the presence
Fountain Pen Atom Meter. 2nd November 1949
Pocket meters to register the presence of radioactive material are to be turned out by the hundred thousand at scientific instrument factories in Leeds, Yorkshire and Micham Surrey. They look like fountain pens and work from a flash lamp battery.
The Government is considering whether there should be a general issue, on the lines of the gas mask issue in the event of war.
The Atomic pen is so simple a child can use it, by holding it to the eye like a telescope. Powerful magnifying lenses are trained on to a quartz fibre needle, which swings over when radioactivity is present. The extent of the radioactivity can be read on a graded scale.
First deliveries will be to the Civil Defence Department of the Home Office. They will be issued to air raid wardens, and later to hospitals and industrial firms working with radioactive isotopes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the revolutionary Fountain Pen Atom Meter, a groundbreaking scientific instrument from the 1940s. Produced in large quantities at scientific instrument factories in Leeds, Yorkshire, and Micham Surrey, these pocket meters were designed to detect the presence of radioactive material. Resembling elegant fountain pens, they operated using a flash lamp battery. The government is currently deliberating whether to distribute these atomic pens on a mass scale, similar to how gas masks were issued during times of war. Surprisingly simple to use, even children can handle them by holding them up to their eyes like telescopes. Equipped with powerful magnifying lenses focused on a quartz fiber needle, this ingenious device swings over when radioactivity is detected. The level of radioactivity can then be easily determined by reading the graded scale. Initially intended for air raid wardens within the Civil Defense Department of the Home Office, these atom meters will eventually find their way into hospitals and industrial firms working with radioactive isotopes. This photograph offers us a glimpse into an era defined by experimentation and innovation amidst the backdrop of war and conflict. It serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and our ability to harness science for both protection and progress.
