EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of space exploration. Taken in 1982 at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonauts Centre, Star City, near Moscow, it showcases three remarkable individuals who played pivotal roles in the French-Soviet mission training. From left to right stand Soviet cosmonauts Vladimir Solovyov and Leonid Kizim, alongside CNES (French) astronaut Patrick Baudry. Patrick Baudry joined CNES as an astronaut in 1980 and dedicated himself to rigorous training over the next two years, including intensive sessions at Star City. In 1982, he served as a member of the back-up crew for the groundbreaking French-Soviet space mission (Soyuz T-6 to Salyut 7). Later on, Baudry would achieve his dream of venturing into space during mission STS-51-G in 1985. Leonid Kizim had already embarked on multiple space missions by this time - in 1980,1984, and again in 1986. Similarly accomplished is Vladimir Solovyov who flew space missions both in 1984 and again in 1986. This image not only symbolizes international collaboration but also represents humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our planet's boundaries. It serves as a testament to these brave men who defied gravity and ventured into uncharted territories for scientific advancement. Captured with historical significance by Science Photo Library, this photograph immortalizes an era when dreams took flight amidst technological marvels that forever changed our understanding of outer space.
