Nuclear reactor of Sizewell B power station
Pressurised water reactor (PWR) at Sizewell B nuclear power station. The reactor (grey, at lower centre) uses enriched uranium as a fuel. Energy is released as the atomic nuclei split (fission). This energy is used to heat pressurised water which then passes into the four steam generators (upper left and upper right). This waters energy is transferred across a heat exchanger in the steam generator to boil water into steam. This high-pressure steam then passes out of a pipe at the top of the steam generator and is used to drive electrical turbines (not seen here). Based on an American design and opened in 1995, Sizewell B is Britains first PWR power station

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive nuclear reactor of Sizewell B power station, located in the United Kingdom. At the heart of this advanced facility lies a pressurized water reactor (PWR), depicted as a prominent grey structure at the lower center of the image. This PWR employs enriched uranium as its fuel source, harnessing energy through atomic nuclei splitting, known as fission. The released energy is then utilized to heat pressurized water within four steam generators positioned in the upper left and upper right corners. The intense heat from this water is transferred across a heat exchanger within each steam generator, causing it to boil into powerful steam. This high-pressure steam surges through a pipe situated at the top of each generator and ultimately propels electrical turbines out of sight, generating electricity. Sizewell B power station holds great significance for Britain since its opening in 1995 marked the country's first utilization of PWR technology. Based on an American design, this cutting-edge facility represents a remarkable milestone in British nuclear power generation. This awe-inspiring photograph not only captures the intricate workings of Sizewell B's nuclear reactor but also highlights humanity's pursuit of sustainable and efficient energy sources for our ever-growing needs.
