Apollo Service Module thruster quad
Apollo Service Module thruster quad on display. This thruster, a type of reaction control system (RCS), was used for NASAs Apollo program of manned missions to the Moon. Each thruster quad had four nozzles and four of them were mounted on the outside of the Command/Service Module that was used to journey between the Earth and the Moon. Fired in unison, they produced small amounts of thrust to make small adjustments to the direction and orientation of the spacecraft. The Apollo program took place between 1961 and 1975. Photographed at the Apollo/Saturn V Center, at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Apollo Service Module thruster quad, a crucial component of NASA's Apollo program. As part of the reaction control system (RCS), these thrusters played a vital role in guiding and maneuvering the Command/Service Module during its manned missions to the Moon. With four nozzles on each quad, four of these powerful thrusters were mounted externally on the spacecraft. Firing simultaneously, these thrusters generated small bursts of thrust that allowed for precise adjustments to be made to the spacecraft's direction and orientation. This technological marvel symbolizes humanity's determination and ingenuity as it embarked on an unprecedented journey beyond Earth. Photographed at the renowned Apollo/Saturn V Center within Florida's Kennedy Space Center, this image serves as a testament to America's rich space heritage. It stands proudly among other exhibits, capturing visitors' attention with its intricate details and historical significance. The Apollo program spanned from 1961 to 1975, marking a pivotal era in space exploration history. This photograph not only offers insight into past achievements but also serves as an educational tool for future generations eager to learn about our remarkable advancements in science and technology. Displayed within this museum setting, this print allows viewers to appreciate both the engineering prowess behind rocket propulsion systems and their critical role in propelling humans towards new frontiers. The Science Photo Library has expertly captured this piece of history—a tangible reminder of mankind's audacious pursuit of knowledge and adventure beyond our home planet.
