The Queen's Theatre and Opera-house, Edinburgh, 1857. Creator: Unknown
The Queen's Theatre and Opera-house, Edinburgh, 1857. This newly-built theatre, designed by Mr. Bryce, is considered to be creditable to the taste and skill of the architect, both as regards the picturesque frontage of the building, and the commodious and convenient construction of the interior. The house is seated for about 1700, having three tiers of boxes and galleries...The adoption of the semicircular, instead of the horseshoe, form of the house greatly foreshortens the distance between the centre boxes and the stage, and thus enhances both the power of the voice and the effect of the scene. Indeed, from the furthest seat of the gallery the line of vision is perfect, and the actor or vocalist will be distinctly heard in every corner...[The theatre] has been leased from the shareholders by Mr. Black, whose management has been characterised by great spirit and enterprise'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts The Queen's Theatre and Opera-house in Edinburgh, as it appeared in 1857. The theatre, a masterpiece of architectural design by Mr. Bryce, was a source of great pride for the city. Its exterior, with its intricate details and picturesque facade, was a feast for the eyes. But the true magic of The Queen's Theatre lay within its walls. Seating approximately 1700 patrons, the interior boasted three tiers of boxes and galleries, providing ample space for Edinburgh's theatre-loving community. The adoption of the semicircular shape, rather than the traditional horseshoe design, was a revolutionary move that brought the performers closer to the audience. This innovative construction not only enhanced the actor's voice but also ensured a clear line of sight from every corner of the gallery. The Queen's Theatre was a testament to the architectural prowess and artistic vision of its time. Its opening was met with great excitement, and the theatre quickly gained a reputation for its excellent acoustics and unobstructed views. The lease of the theatre was taken by Mr. Black, who is known for his management's great spirit and enterprise. The theatre flourished under his leadership, offering Edinburgh's residents a cultural hub where they could immerse themselves in the world of music, drama, and opera. This photograph is a snapshot of a bygone era, a time when the theatre was the heart of the community, and a place where people came together to share in the joy of live performance. The Queen's Theatre and Opera-house, Edinburgh, 1857, remains an enduring symbol of the city's rich cultural heritage.
