EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "France-Fevrier 1934" captures a significant moment in French history. In the image, passersby can be seen engrossed in reading posters proclaiming "la patrie en danger" (the homeland is in danger) on the streets of Paris. This scene unfolds shortly after the riots of February 6th, 1934, which were triggered by the Stavisky Affair - a massive fraud scandal that had shaken the nation. The leaders of various right-wing leagues and veterans' associations decided to organize a demonstration on the same day when Edouard Daladier was scheduled to make his ministerial declaration before Parliament. Shouting slogans like "down with thieves" protesters gathered at Place de la Concorde. However, due to lack of guidance from the prefecture and overwhelmed security forces, chaos ensued. The crowd was met with gunfire resulting in around twenty deaths and hundreds injured. This event marked an important turning point as it led to further political mobilization against fascism. On February 12th, a united gathering organized by communists and socialists denounced this fascist threat and is considered a precursor to the June 1936 Popular Front movement. The historical significance captured within this photograph resonates deeply as it documents not only a critical moment during France's turbulent political crisis but also highlights how public sentiment played an essential role in shaping subsequent events leading up to major socio-political shifts such as the formation of the Popular Front in later years.
