Penarth Pier, a fine example of Victorian engineering

Penarth Pier is a fine example of Victorian engineering. It stretches out into the Bristol Channel from the Welsh coast near Cardiff. This is a desaturated image with blue graduated filters applied.
Building of the pier, which was privately owned by the Penarth Promenade & Landing Pier Company, commenced in April 1894. The contractors were James & Arthur Mayoh with a local man, Herbert Francis Edwards, being the engineer for the project. It was 658 feet long, this being the maximum length allowed to avoid affecting the deep water channel into Cardiff Docks.
It was opened to the public in February 1895, but the formal opening ceremony did not occur untl 6th April. The original structure was of cast iron with a timber deck and acted as a promenade and landing jetty for the then lucrative steam ship trade in the Bristol Channel

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Penarth Pier, a remarkable testament to Victorian engineering. Jutting out into the vast expanse of the Bristol Channel near Cardiff, Wales, this desaturated image with blue graduated filters applied adds a touch of artistic allure. The construction of this magnificent pier began in April 1894 under the ownership of the Penarth Promenade & Landing Pier Company. James & Arthur Mayoh were entrusted as contractors for the project, while Herbert Francis Edwards served as the local engineer. With a length reaching an impressive 658 feet, it adhered to regulations ensuring that it would not hinder access to Cardiff Docks' deep water channel. Although open to the public since February 1895, its formal inauguration took place on April 6th. Originally crafted from cast iron and featuring a timber deck, Penarth Pier served both as a promenade and landing jetty during its heyday when steam ship trade thrived in the bustling Bristol Channel. Captured by Carolyn Eaton and available through Fine Art Storehouse, this print encapsulates not only an architectural marvel but also pays homage to an era defined by innovation and grandeur. It invites viewers to appreciate both the historical significance and aesthetic beauty of Penarth Pier's Victorian design.
