EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the historic moment when HMS Ark Royal, a British Royal Navy aircraft carrier of the Second World War, was launched in Liverpool. The sheer magnitude of this magnificent vessel is evident as her huge bows tower over the dockyard, showcasing her impressive iron flight deck that spans an incredible 800 feet long and 94 feet across. The construction of HMS Ark Royal was a monumental feat that took three years and three months to complete at a cost of £2,330,000. Designed to carry a large number of aircraft with two hangar deck levels, this warship played a crucial role in various operations during the war. Lady Maud Hoare had the honor of christening and launching HMS Ark Royal into the River Mersey on that fateful day in April 1937. Little did anyone know then that this mighty vessel would go on to make history by being involved in significant events such as the first aerial and U-boat kills of the war and participating in missions like searching for the German battleship Bismarck and escorting convoys to Malta. Tragically, HMS Ark Royal met its demise when it was torpedoed by a German submarine on November 13th, 1941. Despite sinking the following day with only one casualty among its crew members out of nearly fifteen hundred individuals aboard, its legacy lives on as an emblematic symbol of bravery and resilience during one of humanity's darkest periods – World War II.
