Dudley blast furnaces OP02658
Blast furnace, Russells Hall, Dudley, West Midlands, 1859. Mr Mills, dilute albumen print. Mr Mills, otherwise unknown as a photographer, recorded the blast furnaces at Russells Hall, west of Dudley, when the industry was producing a vast number of iron products, including nails, boilers, vices and chains. Coal mining around Dudley had been recorded in the early 13th century and the area was famous for the manufacture of iron nails in the early 16th century. By the late 18th century Dudley was at the centre of Englands iron industry, and the region was dubbed the Black Country because of the blackening of the landscape by the coal and iron industries. Russells Hall itself was pockmarked by clay pits and coal shafts, and significant urban development only took place after the Second World War

The image depicts the Blast Furnaces at Russells Hall, a site that had been a hub of iron production since the early 13th century. By the Victorian era, Dudley was at the forefront of England's iron industry, with coal mining and iron manufacturing shaping the landscape and economy of the region. The area, famously dubbed the 'Black Country' due to the coal and iron industries' impact on the environment, was marked by clay pits and coal shafts. This photograph captures the Blast Furnaces in their prime, with plumes of smoke rising from their chimneys against a backdrop of the surrounding landscape. The furnaces were the lifeblood of the region, producing a vast array of iron products, including nails, boilers, vices, and chains. Mr. Mills' photograph is an invaluable record of this pivotal moment in history, offering a unique perspective on the industrial processes that transformed England during the Victorian era.
