EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored lithograph depicts the European White Stork, Ciconia ciconia, in the act of feeding its young in Plate 30 from John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain, Volume 4 (1873). The European White Stork is a large bird, belonging to the Ciconiidae family, order Ciconiiformes, and class Aves. This image captures the bird's distinctive long, downward-curved bill, which is perfectly adapted for catching and handling its prey. The European White Stork is a widespread bird, found throughout Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. It is an opportunistic feeder, feeding on a wide range of prey, including amphibians, reptiles, fish, rodents, and invertebrates. In this illustration, the stork is shown with a frog in its bill, a common food source for the species. The European White Stork is known to nest in colonies, often on the tops of tall structures, such as chimneys or trees. They are monogamous birds, returning to the same nesting site year after year. The chick hatches after a long incubation period of around 43 days. Both parents take turns in feeding the chick, which is initially covered in downy feathers and helpless. This beautiful illustration captures the European White Stork in its natural habitat, feeding its young during the daytime. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the bird to life, making it a true masterpiece of 19th-century ornithological illustration.
