In this evocative black-and-white photograph, we find the G-class destroyer HMS Gallant (G72) gracefully moored alongside the County-class cruiser HMS Sussex (12,350 tons) in the historic British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, in 1938. The serene waters of the Mediterranean Sea create a mirror-like reflection, enhancing the visual impact of these magnificent warships. The G-class destroyers, such as HMS Gallant, were a significant improvement over their preceding classes, boasting improved seaworthiness and armament. Armed with six 4.7-inch guns, ten 2-pounder anti-aircraft guns, and six torpedo tubes, HMS Gallant was a formidable force to be reckoned with. HMS Sussex, on the other hand, was a powerful County-class cruiser, which served as the backbone of the Royal Navy's cruiser fleet during the interwar period.
