Explorer 1 in orbit

Explorer 1. Computer artwork of Americas first successful artificial satellite, Explorer 1, in orbit. Explorer 1 was launched on 31 January 1958, after the USSR took the USA by surprise by launching the worlds first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, on 4 October 1957. The satellite measured 2.05 metres in length and weighed 14 kilograms. It orbited Earth at heights of between 360 kilometres and 2520 kilometres until 31 March 1970. It carried, amongst other instruments, a geiger counter, used to detect cosmic rays. Data collected by the satellite led to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belt, a torus of charged particles held in place by the Earths magnetic field

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures a significant moment in history - the launch of Explorer 1, America's first successful artificial satellite. Created by Science Photo Library, this print showcases the technological marvel that took to the skies on January 31,1958. In the wake of the USSR's surprise launch of Sputnik 1 in October 1957, Explorer 1 became a symbol of American ingenuity and determination during the intense space race between these two superpowers. Measuring at an impressive length of 2.05 meters and weighing 14 kilograms, this pioneering satellite orbited Earth at varying heights from February until March 1970. Equipped with various instruments including a geiger counter for cosmic ray detection, Explorer 1 played a crucial role in scientific discovery. The data collected by this remarkable spacecraft led to one of its most significant findings - the identification of the Van Allen radiation belt encircling our planet. As we gaze upon this stunning illustration, we are reminded not only of humanity's relentless pursuit to explore beyond our earthly boundaries but also how pivotal moments like these shape our understanding of space and its mysteries. This print serves as a testament to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and North American scientists who propelled us further into the realms of knowledge during the International Geophysical Year. Let us celebrate this iconic milestone in space exploration as we admire Science Photo Library's exquisite representation capturing both historical significance and technological advancement within our solar system.
