Space Shuttle launch
Space Shuttle launch, computer enhanced image. This is mission STS-99, flown by the Space Shuttle Endeavour. It launched on 11 February 2000. Space Shuttles, flown by NASA since 1981, are reusable spacecraft launched with an external fuel tank (orange) and two booster rockets (white) on either side of the external tank. Liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen fuel from the external tank is used to run the Shuttles main internal engines (blue exhaust gases). Most of the thrust is from the two booster rockets that use an explosive solid fuel mixture. The external tank is discarded, but the booster rockets parachute back to Earth and are reused. An ascent takes about 9 minutes. The Shuttle uses its wings to glide back to Earth after it has re-entered the atmosphere

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment of a Space Shuttle launch, showcasing the sheer power and technological marvel of NASA's space missions. The computer-enhanced image depicts mission STS-99, flown by the iconic Space Shuttle Endeavour on 11 February 2000. The photograph highlights the reusable nature of these spacecraft, with an external fuel tank in vibrant orange and two booster rockets in pristine white flanking it. The main internal engines emit striking blue exhaust gases as they propel the shuttle into orbit. Most of the thrust is generated by the explosive solid fuel mixture within the booster rockets. As this historic ascent unfolds, one cannot help but be mesmerized by both its beauty and significance. In just nine minutes, this incredible feat takes place, propelling humanity further into space exploration. Once their purpose is served, the external tank is discarded while the booster rockets gracefully parachute back to Earth for future reuse. After re-entering Earth's atmosphere, guided by its wings like a majestic bird gliding through air currents, the Space Shuttle prepares for landing. This single rocket symbolizes mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge and discovery beyond our planet's boundaries. This remarkable illustration not only showcases cutting-edge technology but also represents a pivotal moment in history; a testament to human ingenuity and determination to explore what lies beyond our skies.
