EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 17th century print depicts the Hindu Goddess Durga, a formidable deity revered for her protective power and victory over evil. The Goddess is shown in her full regalia, standing boldly with multiple arms and limbs, each holding a distinct weapon. In this rendition, Durga is dressed in an opaque red sari, adorned with intricate gold border designs, and bedecked with ornaments and jewelry. Her fierce expression and piercing gaze convey her unwavering determination to vanquish all adversaries. The Goddess's right hand holds a sword, symbolizing the power to destroy evil, while her left hand is in the protective gesture of granting blessings. The trident in her other left hand represents the three fundamental aspects of God - creation, preservation, and destruction. The blade in her lower right hand is a symbol of courage and the discus in her upper right hand represents the cycle of time. This stunning work of art, created using watercolor and silver on paper, is believed to have originated in the regions of Basohli or Punjab in the late 17th century. It is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of South East Asia and the intricate detailing and symbolism that characterizes Hindu art. The Goddess Durga continues to be a revered figure in Hinduism, and this print serves as a powerful reminder of her enduring presence and influence in the Indian subcontinent and beyond.
