Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, 1963

Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova preparing to become the first woman in space. Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova (born 1937) flew solo in the Vostok 6 spacecraft on 16 June 1963. She spent almost three days in orbit, circling the Earth 48 times. Tereshkova was one of several female parachutists selected for this mission. They were trained separately from the male cosmonauts, and it was 19 years before another woman went into space. After her flight, Tereshkova trained as an engineer, and later became a politician. Her flight made her famous in the USSR and around the world. Photographed on 16 June 1963, at Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This iconic print captures the historic moment when Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova prepared to embark on her groundbreaking journey as the first woman in space. Taken on June 16,1963, at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, this image showcases a young and determined Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova, who was only in her twenties at the time. Selected from a group of female parachutists specifically trained for this mission, Tereshkova's flight aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft marked a significant milestone in both space exploration and gender equality. Spending nearly three days orbiting Earth and completing an impressive 48 revolutions around our planet, she solidified herself as a pioneering figure in human history. Following her remarkable achievement, Tereshkova continued to make strides beyond space travel. She pursued engineering training and later ventured into politics. Her extraordinary flight not only brought her fame within the USSR but also gained worldwide recognition. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the early days of manned spaceflight and highlights Tereshkova's pivotal role as an Asian Russian woman breaking barriers in technology and science during the mid-20th century. It symbolizes progress, courage, and determination while paying tribute to one of humanity's greatest achievements - venturing beyond our home planet into the vastness of outer space.
